The Sunday Scaries...

When I was a young teacher, I used to be sick to my stomach on Sunday nights. There was always something about coming back from a weekend that provoked anxiety for me.
In truth, sometimes it’s still there. They are not the same worries, but that feeling of worry can still hover over me on a Sunday. And, now with three young boys, a full-time job, a family to care for, and a new business endeavor, I have plenty of new things to feel anxious about. Maybe you do too?
So, how did I make it stop (mostly)?
By planning and organizing…
I plan and organize myself, but I also plan and organize my family. One thing that has really worked for us is a laminated checklist. Some of my friends and family think that this seems silly, but it has been a game changer at my house. It’s April now, and my 7 and 9 year old sons know the routine of the school year pretty well. They follow the checklist and get themselves ready for the week. Their checklists obviously aren’t the same as the ones that you would use for middle school or high school students, but these checklists will begin to teach them about planning and accountability. And so far, it has saved me a lot of stress and scolding. Their one qualm is that I don’t make their 4-year old brother follow a checklist too. Planning goals, I guess?
As a teacher, I have found that creating a space and routine for my students to organize and plan their weeks on Monday has been a game changer, but not all teachers or schools are able to build this into their day. I have also noticed that students who already do this on Sundays, either independently or with support at home, come into the week in a healthier emotional state, ready to tackle what they have on their plate!
We are sharing a free resource to help you establish a Crushing the Sunday Scaries routine.

Sunday doesn’t need to be scary.
